Government's 2010 DG resigns
<< Back to News

The DG for the South African government’s 2010 FIFA World Cup unit, Joe Phaahla, would leave step down from his position at the end of the month, the government said on Thursday.

It said that Phaahla, who was elected to the ruling ANC’s national executive committee in December, had requested Sport and Recreation Minister Makhenkesi Stofile to shorten his three-year contract, which was to end in August. This would allow for an earlier handover to a new head of the team as the sporting event was less than 30 months away, it said.

Phaahla had indicated that he wished to focus on opportunities in the private sector and also that he wished to spend more time on ANC work.
